On a small island just off California, jazz pianist and everyman, Tom Stewart (Carlson) is readying himself for his upcoming wedding to wealthy heiress Meg (Sanders). While loitering around the local lighthouse, he is suddenly surprised by his former girlfriend, Vi (which, it would appear, isn’t so much of an ex, despite his engagement). At first it’s a pleasant enough reunion, until Vi starts to demand that he leave Meg for her and that failure to do so will result in her spilling the beans on their recent activity. Finding himself between a rock and a hard place, Tom strikes it lucky when Vi slips off the balcony and is left hanging. At first he reaches out to help her, but then thinks better of it, watching as she plummets to her death. But that’s only the beginning of the story. Night after night Tom is plagued with visions of Vi as she plays records, chuckles in the shadows and generally freaks Tom out. Determined that the wedding will carry on regardless, Tom tries to ignore her, and then the trawler captain (Turkel) that brought Vi to the island turns up, putting two and two together and all hell is let loose.
